HOW-TO'S BY INDUSTRY EXPERTS
Social Media: Are you Protected?
Social media has come on so fast and furious that rules, regulations, laws, and even – and especially – etiquette have not been able to keep up with the tremendous speed with which it’s taken over. It’s uncharted territory for many individuals and the same holds true for dealerships. Here’s what managers can do to protect their dealership:
- ANALYZE the need and use of social media in your particular workplace. Figure out what you need to do and why you’re doing it.
- ADOPT written policies that specifically cover social media use both inside and outside of the workplace before and after working hours.
- IMPLEMENT the policies, preferably through a formal policy rollout that’s documented and provable. Automated systems enable automatic electronic signature showing that employees have read and reviewed policies.
- EDUCATE employees regarding the legal risk of inappropriate postings. A great rule of thumb is to treat everything as if it’s on the record and open for public consumption. The reality is many employees don’t have this same level of review and scrutiny when it comes to social media. Make sure employees know that communicating via social media is a significant event and whatever they’re sending is considered public record.
