As desperate times can lead to desperate measures Ron Sompels, executive-in-charge of Crowe Horwath's Retail Dealer practice, discussed how current economic conditions, layoffs and remaining overworked employees create a perfect storm for fraud at dealerships. According to Sompels, even trusted employees can be pushed to dishonesty when they find themselves facing financial challenges in their personal lives or feel it can be done without being detected.
Drawing 191 registrants and 114 connections, this event reviewed recent cases of fraud that have resulted in a loss of millions of dollars at dealerships. Sompels pointed out that these are only the detected or publicized fraud cases, and it is likely there are several other instances going on undetected today.
This fraud prevention Webinar concluded by outlining the essential actions dealerships should take to analyze and adjust their internal controls to reduce the risk of fraud and increase the likelihood of detection, which may help avoid potential losses.
