Storm Water Pollution Prevention

A Storm Water Pollution Prevention Plan (SWPPP) is a required element of the NPDES permit program and it is applicable to discharges of storm water associated with industrial activities. Penalties for violating the NPDES permit or not having a permit to discharge into waters of the U.S. may be up to $27,500 per violation per day. The purpose of the Storm Water Pollution Prevention Plan is to prevent potential discharges of pollutants directly to surface waters or indirectly through the storm water system.

The program is designed to help implement and document structural and non-structural controls and best management practices (BMPs) used to prevent discharges of pollutants to storm water in order to protect water quality of neighboring surface waters and receiving waters from storm channels.

The Storm Water Pollution Prevention program includes the following elements:

  • Policies and Procedures
  • Supervisor Guidelines
