A Seat At The Compliance Lunch Table For Everyone

Last week I wrote about how excited I am to join the other “cool kids” for SCCE CEI. The post started a conversation in our office and grew on LinkedIn – about cool kids and getting a seat at the lunch table. Someone then brought up the new app called “Sit With Us” that was developed by a high school student. It gives students a way to feel included in the awkward social hour schools call lunchtime – without fear of rejection.

This got me thinking about compliance programs. Are you speaking to everyone or just the cool kids? Are your compliance materials inclusive of all users? Does the language or accessibility leave anyone out? How can you make sure everyone in your organization has a seat at the compliance lunch table?

To answer these questions we are revisiting the A.C.E. (Accountability, Clarity & Ease) approach.

How can you make sure everyone in your organization has a seat at the compliance lunch table?

Who is accountable?

It should be clear who is responsible for compliance on every level so when issues arise and/or someone has a question employees know who to approach. In addition to knowing who to contact, they should also be assured the individual responsible is available and will listen to them. If no one takes responsibility on a departmental level, things can easily fall through the cracks.

Is it clear?

Policies and regulations must be clear enough for people to understand and follow them. Then there should be an obvious path for your workforce to stay in compliance. That path should also be the one of least resistance – e.g. the only obvious choice is for employees stay in compliance.

Is it easy?

Your compliance management system has to be easy to use. Easy for the implementer and easy for the user. People are less likely to complete a process if there are too many steps or if the steps are too complicated. The right thing to do should always be the easiest.
