I have the pleasure of speaking to Compli client, Tina Garner, who’s the (former) manager for human resources for RideNow Power Sports, in Arizona. Tina, thanks very much for making the time to talk to us today.
Tina: Thanks for having me.
Tell me a little bit about what RideNow Powersports does.
Tina: RideNow Powersports is the largest dealership in the United States, of on and off road powersports vehicles.
Everything from ATVs to boats?
Tina: Correct, yeah, side by sides, rangers, motorcycles, yeah.
Never a quiet day on your lot there.
Tina: No quiet days.
You have a lot of employees.
Tina: We have 13, almost 1,300 employees in eight states. There are 28 dealerships right now.
No kidding. That’s a lot of places to try and manage and keep up with.
Tina: It is. Being multi-state, you can imagine what our compliance looks like.

That, I guess, would where Compli comes in. I can only imagine trying to keep up with all that. How long have you been using Compli?
Tina: I think we’re in our eighth year, maybe. Don’t quote me on that. Perhaps our eighth year. It has been a very long time.
Given your multi-state operation, how does Compli help you manage that large employee base?
Tina: Honestly, I can’t imagine not having Compli. Compli is the glue that keeps us together. Honestly, they really do provide the consistency that we need to make what our compliance requirements are. Compli makes it global for us. We’re able to get everything out to our employees quickly and seamlessly through Compli.
Excellent. Tell me how you use Compli exactly. Onboarding is a big part of what you do with it. Correct?
Tina: Yes. We have all of our forms within the Compli system, all of our policies, and all of our trainings in Compli for new employees and existing employees.
How does it work for a new employee? You hire someone and then what happens?
Tina: We have, within the Compli system, all of our employees have their own private inboxes. Everything is sent to them that they are required to complete as an employee of the company. That includes forms that onboard them from the I9 to their pay plan, to all their tax forms, whatever’s required of them that part of the direct deposit if they would like to have it. That is within their inbox, as well as the employee handbook and all the policies that we require them to sign and any exception policies to the handbook that are based on their position.

For example, if they’re in finance, they may have a specific policy related to customer privacy. Then, trainings are also within their inbox. They must sign in as an employee and then sign their life away. Truly. That’s the way they feel.
It does take a little bit of time to complete all of that. Usually, the forms are first. They do have to be hired as an employee, so they’re going to complete all their onboarding forms, their I9, their tax forms, et cetera, and get hired and then sign away all those policies. They go through some trainings, which includes sexual harassment training, or safety training, or the financial compliance training that our industry requires.
That’s a big part of what you do, isn’t it?
Tina: It is. It truly is, because we do have to safeguard that customer information.
There’s a lot of, I would imagine, different regulations from state to state?
Tina: Right, and truly Compli has been our savior with that, because we are able to streamline that within that system. We can actually identify what is required for each one of those employees, based on where they’re at, if they’re in Nevada, or Texas, or Florida, the system helps us get that information to that employee simply because of where they reside at.
They’re a Texas employee, so, they need this policy, or they need this training. Then we can followup and make sure that they’re getting that correct information.
How have you seen compliance in your particular industry change over the years?
Tina: There are certainly more regulations in more areas.
One thing we don’t run out of, right?
Tina: Right. That truly is across the board, not just with customer information, or employee requirements in that industry specific related to driving a motorcycle, or being on the road. Safety is a big factor that has affected us with compliance as well.
What would your biggest compliance challenge be as a director of human resources right now?
Tina: Just staying current. Honestly, keeping up is my greatest challenge. I can go to bed and wake up the next day and have a new policy I have to write just because someone decided that they want to pay $2.00 more an hour in one state. It changes everything. I, honestly, compliance is outrageous.
How has the Compli team helped you navigate through some of those changes?
Tina: I think, honestly, with Compli, I have everything at my fingertips; not just the ability to share the information, but also the information itself. Compli is a resource for me. It’s a big conglomerate that keeps me current. I know that Compli is also industry. I use Compli as a resource and a tool, not just to get the data to my employees, but to make sure that what I’m looking at is current. Compli is connected to the industry and to lots of legal minds to make sure that what I am imparting to my employees is consistent, and real, and now. That’s really critical to us.
